As far as I know, there is no benefit of leveling up skills, besides access to better quests and items. Which means going from say 17 mining to 18 mining does nothing.
Options:
Simple upgrades:
A set upgrade per skill (or set progression).
i.e each time you get a point in strength, it adds 1 damage to when using melee weapons equipped (or to the melee only)
Mining: Increased speed of mining, OR increased chance of rarer loot.
Farming: Increased speed OR chance of a ‘gold’ crop (better stats).
etc
Skill Tree per skill:
Allow the player to select from a skill tree for each skill. This would have various buffs, and allow the player to customize their experience depending on what they prefer. There would likely need to be a ‘cost’ to reset the skill tree and re-allocate the points, and/or possibly a cooldown too. Please see Core Keeper for a decent example of how it could be done.
